Fisticuffs at Camden bar result in cut arm, broken window
CAMDEN — A fight that began by the pool table at the Smokestack Grill, Dec. 6, left one man with an injured arm and a window broken before the altercation spilled out to the sidewalk.
While Santa Claus and his Elf were visiting downtown Camden at the start of the annual Christmas by the Sea weekend, tensions were rising between a group of local and two Massachusetts men over at the bar on Mechanic Street.
Camden Police Department Sgt. Dan Brown was dispatched to the Smokestack at 10 p.m. following a call reporting that a man had been thrown through the window there. Brown arrived to find a group of six to eight men outside in the area between the bar door and the entrance to the Knox Mill office building and who were enlisted in an “altercation,” according to the police report.
Police said Dec. 9 that the argument initially ensued between local men who had been playing pool and the visitors. A fight broke out and one of the men was pushed into a window by the door, breaking the glass.
Although he suffered lacerations to the arm, the man declined medical treatment.
The men were not involved in a pool game with each other, police said. Alcohol was involved.
The Massachusetts men returned to their hotel and the others dispersed, police said. Knox Mill maintenance crew immediately replaced the window.
Despite that incident, which remains under investigation, Camden’s Christmas by the Sea was uneventful throughout the weekend, from the law enforcement perspective. One woman was issued a summons for theft by unlawful taking at Reny’s Dec. 7.
