Fishermen, hooded merganser make appearances at Camden mill pond

CAMDEN — The mill pond above the waterfalls at the Knox Mill is turning out to be a great place to people and animal watch. The Penobscot Bay Pilot’s office recently relocated from one end of the mill along Mechanic Street to the other, and so far it’s turning out to be a fun new location, if not a little distracting.
Wednesday around noon, two anglers showed up on shore and cast their lines for an hour or so. At least one of the fishermen eventually caught a fish, and a good size one to boot.
Today, Friday, we have been treated to the sight of a lone male hooded merganser, the second smallest of the six species of mergansers.
A fairly common duck on small ponds and rivers, the hooded merganser nests in tree cavities and its young leap to the ground when just a day old, according to the Cornell Lab or Ornithology.
Their fan-shaped crest is collapsible, with the male’s crest being black and white and the female’s cinnamon brown.
If you don’t have ducks near where you work, we can attest that there are few things in the office that bring a smile as easily as the sound of a flush of ducks quacking away, for no apparent reason.
