ROCKLAND — Emma Gertrude Hill, 104, entered into the arms of her Lord, Wednesday, July 15, 2020 at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born March 21, 1916 in Appleton to Harry and Lucille (Heath) Pierce, she was educated in local schools before settling down in Rockland.

On June 30, 1936 she married Harold O. Hill and together had two children, Walter and Avis (Sedgwick) Hill.

Emma worked as fish packer with both Holmes and Port Clyde Fish Packing Companies and as a housekeeper and Sunday School teacher.

She was a devoted and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Rockland and loved to sew and make quilts for missionaries with fellow church members. She also taught Sunday School there for many, many years.

An avid bird watcher, she enjoyed going on jaunts with her friends to view them. Gardening was another pleasure of Emma’s and she preferred plants and houseplants native to Maine. She had an exceptional green thumb and was able to grow huge African Violets.

She loved her sweets of ice cream, chocolates, and fudge. Family members always looked forward to Christmas and birthdays when she would make her chocolate peanut butter and divinity fudge. Emma treasured her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, keeping in touch with them often and being involved in their lives.

While living and raising her children in Rockland, she resided with her relative Eda Mae Messer Post and her husband Colby W. Post.

Right up until the end of her life she was a strong and independent woman, always ready with a smile and a laugh, and loved to discuss current events intelligently. Emma saw a lot in her 104 years, she never had a drivers license, and loved to share the history of the world she grew up in. She had a sparkle in her eye, a quick wit, and loved Wasses hot dogs, yellow roses and the color green.

As a devout Christian, she strived to live her life in a manner that was a testament to God, his love, and his teachings. Emma was an example of what God wanted his children to be by living a life of service to others, loving others unconditionally, and being a devoted matriarch to 4 generations. She believed God would provide in all things and that you turn all troubles and burdens over to him, having faith that he would take care of you.

Predeceased by her parents; her son, Walter C. Hill; her daughter, Avis Sedgwick; her brothers, George and Charles Pierce; her sisters, Irene and Helen Pierce; step-sisters, Phyllis and Bessie Leach; she is survived by her grandchildren, Glen Hill and his wife Patty, Maureen Sedgwick-Glidden and her husband David, Linwood Sedgwick III, Pamela Sedgwick and her husband Patrick Lewis, and Timothy Sedgwick; her great grandchildren, Colby Hill and his wife Jesse, Devin Hill, Linwood IV, and Christopher Sedgwick, Patrick and Tessa Lewis, and Samantha Sedgwick; her great, great grandchildren, Payson, Jordan, Jackson, and Tyler; her nephew, John Swindell and his daughters, Debora Trefrey, and Diane Chigas.

A celebration of Emma’s life will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at 1 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, with burial to follow at Post Cemetery in Warren.
