Elizabeth Simmons, obituary
ROCKPORT - Elizabeth H. Simmons, 82, died Jan. 22, 2014, at Windward Gardens in Camden, following a long illness.
Born in Brooklyn, Maine, Nov. 7, 1931, she was the daughter of Clifford E. and Louise Cousins Herrick.
After moving to Rockland at a young age, she was educated in local schools and was a 1950 graduate of Rockland High School. Liz later graduated from a business college in Gardiner.
For more than 20 years, she worked as a bookkeeper with B.M. Clark Company in Union, retiring in 1993. The Clark family said that Elizabeth was extremely committed to the company and its owner at that time, Randall Clark. She later worked more than five years as a sales associate with Walmart in Rockland.
For many years, she was an active member of West Rockport Baptist Church and Rockland Senior Citizens, until suffering a stroke in 2011. In association with the Senior Citizens program, Liz coordinated transportation and destination details for many of that group's trips.
An accomplished artist, she enjoyed drawing and was often involved in many crafts.
Other than her parents, Liz was predeceased by a brother, Farrington Herrick; and two sisters, Sarah Herrick and Mrs. Lawrence “Celia” Pooler. She is survived by one son, George Farley and his wife, Debbie, of Union; one daughter, Cheryl Farley of Camden and her friend, Linwood Mylen of Knox; three grandchildren, Jeremy Taylor-Farley of Simpsonville, S.C., Tremayne Baker Opel and his wife, Carol, of Prattville, Ala., and Trystan John Opel and his wife, Carissa, of Deatsville, Ala.; three great-grandchildren, Dominique Opel of Prattville, Ala., and Austin Opel and Cailee Opel of Deatsville, Ala.; as well as nieces and nephews, Belinda Plymak, Jeffrey Pooler, David Herrick, Donald Herrick and Gail Herrick McDonald.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. at West Rockport Baptist Church at 545 Park St. The Rev. Dr. David English will officiate. Spring interment will be in Glen Cove Cemetery, Rockport.
