Edith L. Skoog, obituary
VINALHAVEN — Edith Louise Skoog, 79, a lifelong resident of Vinalhaven, died Nov. 28, 2013, at the Ivan Calderwood Homestead in Vinalhaven. Born in Vinalhaven Feb. 12, 1934, she was the daughter of Howard and Alta (Hildings) Coombs and was a 1952 graduate of Vinalhaven High School. On June 15, 1953, she married Leonard "Bud" Skoog at the Union Church.
A devoted wife, mother and homemaker, Edie was always on the go and maintained a very active life. She was a member of the Union Church, where she sang in the choir and was involved in many church groups and activities. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Order of the Eastern Star. Edie organized Aids Awareness Days on the island, where annual memorial gatherings have been held at the Union Church in honor of loved ones.
Edie loved animals and has devoted much time fundraising for the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County. She was instrumental in organizing annual pet shows held during the summer months on Vinalhaven and donated the proceeds to the shelter.
Surviving is her husband of 60 years, Leonard "Bud" Skoog of Vinalhaven; her son, Eric M. Skoog of Portsmouth, N.H.; a sister-in-law, Patricia Duncan of Camden; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a son, Leonard Skoog Jr.; a brother, Dennis R. Skoog and his wife, Ruth Skoog; a brother-in-law, David Duncan Jr.; and a nephew, David Duncan III.
Services and interment will be announced in the spring. Memorial gifts may be made in Edie's memory to the Vinalhaven Eldercare, P.O. Box 624, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.
