Ducks, lamb and ice cream make for a fine weekend

CAMDEN – It was a touch-and-go weekend as people peeked out their windows wondering what the weather was going to do. Mother Nature was kind and the Midcoast received only some brief spots of rain — not like the rest of the eastern seaboard.

The following photo gallery includes events Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Rockport and Camden.

I started Friday, May 27, at Maine Street Meats, 461 Commercial St. in Rockport, for an out-of-this world lamb sandwich.

Derrick Linker, chef at Main Street Meats, said they started with a 60 pound, pasture raised, lamb from North Star Sheep Farm, in Windham.

"The lamb was salted for a full day," he said. "It was then injected with a salt brine that was infused with thyme, garlic and bay leaves. It was brought to room temperature and placed in the box with coals on top. It was turned every hour until it reached 187 degrees. We let it rest for an hour and then took the meat off the bone and started making sandwiches."

The sandwich was put together on a homemade rustic roll. The bun was dressed with a salsa verde and a special garlic aioli. A pickle for garnish and a wedge of lemon. The sandwich was so juicy and tender, I used more than napkins before I was finished with it.

Linker said that for the last four years, Main Street Meats has roasted a whole animal for the Memorial Day weekend. Three years it was a pig and this year they decided to try the lamb.

On Saturday, I moved on to West Bay Rotary's Duck Derby. Despite some rain it was well attended and proved to be an exciting race as the ducks were released for the head of the harbor and made their way down the course to the finish line.

Prize winners were announced at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
