Donald Stuart Moore, obituary
Donald Stuart Moore passed away peacefully on October 4, 2026, at Sussman House in Rockport, Maine, after a period of declining health.
Born May 6, 1937, in New Milford, Connecticut, to John Moore and Harriet Louisa (Broadbent) Moore, Don was a 1955 graduate of New Milford High School in Connecticut. In 1957, he completed his education in Broadcast Engineering at the RCA Institute in New York City and the Television Workshop of New York, where he graduated with Highest Honors. During his time at school, he worked as a page at the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in New York City.
Following graduation, he accepted a position as a television crewperson at WTIC-TV, a CBS affiliate in Hartford, Connecticut. He rose to the position of Producer/Director for local newscasts, live television events, and investigative documentaries. During his career, he earned an Emmy, two United Press International awards, an Edward R. Murrow Award, and the 1991 Sportsman of the Year Award from the New England Outdoor Writers Association.
In 1972, he chose to leave the rigorous schedule of live television and, with his family, moved to the seacoast village of Port Clyde, Maine. A few months later, he created Composite Productions, Inc. Over the ensuing years, in addition to the productions completed by his company in Maine, he also completed projects for the U.S. Army and Navy, filmed a fishing series for 3M, and more. He also worked cooperatively with National Geographic, the Discovery Channel, the ESPN channel, and the Outdoor Life Network.
Other highlights of his career include exhibitions for the Smithsonian Jazz Collection, the New Orleans Jazz Museum, the Connecticut Arts Foundation, and the New Britain Museum of American Art. He served as a faculty advisor for Film and Television at Trinity College (Hartford, CT), the Community Film Workshop, and Howard University (Washington, D.C.). He conducted lectures on photography and motion pictures for the Maine State Commission for the Arts (Residence Program), the Portland Society of Art for the University of Southern Maine, and the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT. His publications included book, record, and CD covers, as well as magazines. His gallery and magazine work illustrated the world as he saw it. It was rare to see Don without his camera in hand, and his post-professional work included fond visions of Port Clyde, Maine, and Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, as well as portraiture of people he met in his travels. The photographs invite the viewer to come inside the mind of this photographer/storyteller.
Between 2008 and 2024, Don divided his time between Port Clyde, Maine, and Hilton Head, South Carolina, where he established a relationship with the island’s Gullah community, lending his skills to help amplify the voices of this marginalized community, helping them to preserve their rich history and showcasing their unique and deeply rooted culture.
He was predeceased by his parents, as well as his wife of 61 years, Suzanne (Weatherley) Moore.
Don is survived by his son, Jonathan Moore, and wife Lynda of Canterbury, New Hampshire; his daughter, Leslie Hupper, and husband Alan of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Tenants Harbor, Maine; and his five beloved grandchildren: granddaughters Katherine Moore and her partner Alan Tyson of Hanover, Maryland, and Sara Moore and her partner Eduardo Ávila of Gibsons, British Columbia; and grandsons Timothy Crockett and wife Tami Pissott of Summerville, South Carolina, Travis Crockett and wife Karina of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, and Christopher Moore and wife Kaile of Penacook, New Hampshire. He is also survived by a great-grandson, Braxton Buoniconti of Summerville, South Carolina, and a great-granddaughter, Zoey Crockett of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to Don’s caregivers, especially Malta Lee Phelps and his hospice care team.
As per Don’s wishes, there will be no public memorial service. We will honor and celebrate his life privately at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations to the St. George Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, ME 04860.
