AUGUSTA — Local baseball coach Don Shields was inducted into the Maine Babe Ruth Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 16 for his exemplary dedication to Babe Ruth baseball in the Midcoast region over the last nearly three decades.

Shields has been involved with Babe Ruth in the Midcoast area for 27 years, beginning first as an umpire for 10 years before switching to coaching with the Georges Valley Babe Ruth team 17 years ago. He has coached several Midcoast all-star teams over the last 15 years.

For the last 12 years, Shields has also been the president of the Midcoast Babe Ruth League and has run several regional and state Babe Ruth tournaments.

Beyond the Babe Ruth scene, Shields has coached the Georges Valley and Oceanside varsity baseball programs, retiring from coaching last month with a 122-99 overall varsity baseball record.
