searching for paintings that show what is no longer

Call to artists: Belfast the Way It Was

Wed, 04/08/2020 - 12:30pm

The Belfast Free Library is calling for submissions of paintings that represent Belfast in the past for an exhibit in the Kramer Gallery August through September 2020. The exhibit will be curated by Belfast artist Susan Tobey White and Brenda Harrington, program librarian at the Belfast Free Library.

Submissions are due by June 1, 2020.

Speaking about the idea for the exhibit Susan Tobey White said, in a news release, “As artists we unknowingly and without thought record history. We are asking you to dig into your archives for paintings you have created of Belfast. We are searching for paintings that show what is no longer: the chicken plants, the cannery, the train station (the Maskers Theater), the grain silo, or other places where we have seen significant change.”

“What better time to celebrate the changes of our community than 200th Birthday of our State and the 250th anniversary of Belfast's’ Founders Day (1770),” said the Library.

Please submit digital pictures of paintings to Brenda Harrington at bharrington@belfastlibrary.org by June 1, 2020. Please include title, date and medium of the painting. The Library will announce the selections by June 15, 2020.

The exhibit will be on display in the Kramer Gallery of the library from mid-August through September.
