Bus route available for Waldoboro Summer Rec Program

Mon, 07/02/2018 - 3:15pm

Youth in the Waldoboro Summer Recreation program will now have access to a bus to transport them to and from the program on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is possible thanks to grant funds from Full Plates, Full Potential secured by Healthy Lincoln County and the Lincoln County Summer Meals program.

Healthy Lincoln County set a goal to increase the number of children who receive a free, healthy meal this summer. One reason why many families may not participate in the program is because of transportation to and from the meal sites.

“We learned from the school and the town that is also why some families don’t participate in the Summer Rec program.  Summer Meals provides free breakfast and lunch to any child who comes to the site at Miller School, including the children in the Rec program, and we want to feed as many children as we can, so we applied for some grant funds to try and see if a bus will help bring more kids to both programs,” said Kate Marone, Director of Healthy Lincoln County, in a news release.

The Summer Rec program provides five weeks of structured activities and field trips for children entering first through seventh grade. The program is scheduled to begin Monday, July 9 and run 9am to 1pm, Monday through Friday until August 10, at the Miller Elementary School.

Program attendance is flexible, so families can go on vacations and still attend the remaining events when they return. There are many activities and field trips planned for this year. Weekly swimming and hiking trips are planned in addition to other activities around the Midcoast community. The program cost is $40/week per child and non-residents is $60. A limited number of scholarships are available for Waldoboro citizens.
