Belfast man killed in Route 1 head-on collision; Rockport woman transported to hospital
BELFAST — A Belfast man was killed instantly Sept. 11 after his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming vehicle head-on.
Kevin Hustus, 29, was traveling north on Route 1 by the Belfast Armory at roughly 8:30 p.m., according to Detective Bryan Cunningham, of the Belfast Police Department.
Witnesses reportedly told responding officers that the 2001 Saturn SL1 Hustus was driving crossed over the center line by roughly four feet before striking the vehicle in the opposite lane.
That vehicle, a 2009 Saturn Vue, was being operated by Deborah Brady, 55, of Rockport, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The Jaws of Life extrication equipment was required to extract Hustus’ body from his vehicle, which “folded” on impact, according to Cunningham.
Belfast Fire Department, which also responded to the scene, said Hustus was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and his airbag was deployed.
Sergeant Matthew Cook said it doesn’t appear speed was a factor in the crash, although a member of the Maine State Police is working to reconstruct the accident.
Deborah Brady was transported to Waldo County General Hospital before being transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center via Life Flight. Brady’s husband told police Monday morning that Brady had sustained a fractured sternum.
Route 1 was closed to traffic for more than three hours while the scene was cleared.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
