Becky Harjula, obituary
SOUTH THOMASTON — Becky J. Harjula, 54, transitioned to her eternal home Nov. 3, 2013, at Maine Medical Center, following a two-day illness.
Born in Presque Isle March 11, 1959, she was the daughter of William M. Jr. and Edna Daggett Butterfield. At a young age, Becky moved with her family to Lincolnville, where she attended local schools and was a 1977 graduate of Camden-Rockport High School. She later graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C.
From an early age, Becky was an active member of the Chestnut Street Baptist Church in Camden. Her involvement in the youth group of that church took Becky to one event, where she met Bill Harjula, who would eventually win her heart. Becky and Bill were married at Chestnut Street Baptist Church May 31, 1980.
Not only was Becky a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, but she was actively involved in communities that included her home, church and work, among many others. In her home she provided a safe, warm and welcoming place for her family and a multitude of friends and neighbors. Her church community included not simply the buildings of Chestnut Street, or Owls Head Baptist Church, where she has been a member more than 30 years. It extended as Becky shared the love of her Savior and Lord with countless children and adults as she served in many church programs, and as she planned, coordinated, raised funds and chaperoned three mission trips to Mexico and two to New York. Her work community included her work as a secretary with National Sea Products, as a medical transcriptionist in the Pen Bay Healthcare System, and her work for the past 11 years as an educational technician with Rockland District High School, now Oceanside High School, where she knew and was genuinely concerned for every student with whom she came in contact. Becky worked in the library, labored in establishment of the Back Pack Program, and assisted in planning, and making happen each year's senior class graduation. Because all her children played sports, she was often involved in Sports Booster activities, primarily because she loved being with people and devoted herself to helping others.
Becky is survived by her parents, Bill and Edna Butterfield of Camden; her husband, William E. Harjula of South Thomaston; her children, Greg E. Harjula and his wife, Amy, of Needham, Mass., Gary A. Harjula of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and Kristen J. Jarabeck and her husband, Philip, of Lynchburg, Va.; two beloved grandchildren, Colton Price Harjula and William Stephen Harjula; two brothers, Brent Butterfield and his wife, Anette, of Waldoboro, and Bryant Butterfield and his wife, Tanya, of Lincolnville; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit Friday, Nov. 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A celebration of Becky's life will be held Saturday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. at Oceanside High School East Auditorium, 400 Broadway in Rockland. The Rev. Paul Munro will officiate. A reception will follow in the school gym. Private interment will be in Williams Cemetery in South Thomaston.
In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund is being established in Becky's memory, with details to be announced.
