Barbara M. Dorr, obituary
CAMDEN — Barbara May Dorr, 102, passed away Sept. 26, 2013, at Windward Gardens in Camden, where she had resided for several months. Born in Islesford Aug. 22, 1911, she was the daughter of Alonzo John and Ida May (Stanley) Bryant.
Barbara grew up on Islesford, which is located in the Little Cranberry Islands off Mount Desert Island. She attended school in a two-room school house, then traveled off island to attend one year of high school, then returned to Islesford to complete her education. She was second to the youngest in a family of six. Following high school, she worked on the mainland in a laundry owned by her brother and sister-in-law and met her future husband, Ted, through the Rockbound Grange.
Barbara married Theodore B. Dorr and they moved to Camden in 1942, when Ted went to work at Camden Shipbuilding and Marine Railway. Barbara worked in a sewing room located on the Megunticook River on Tannery Lane making baby clothes. The apparel was shipped all over the world. She later worked in a shop that sold yarn and other supplies in Camden.
She was an active longtime member of the Penobscot View Grange in Rockport and was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Seaside Chapter. Both Ted and Barbara were very active members of the Grange and visited 135 granges in Maine. Every weekend, Barbara and Ted went to the Blue Goose in Northport for dances. At the age of 80, Barbara passed the written and practical exam and received her driver's license.
Mrs. Dorr also enjoyed doing puzzles, knitting and crocheting, and had a multitude of good friends and neighbors.
Surviving are several nieces, nephews and great- and great great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, who died Oct. 13, 1994; three brothers; and three sisters.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. at Penobscot View Grange, 1053 Commercial St. (Route 1) in Rockport.
