Authorities make two drug busts across the state
State police, Bar Harbor Police, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency made two drug busts in the past two days, one in Kennebunkport on the Maine turnpike, the other in Bar Harbor, according to a news release from the Maine Office of Public Safety.
Heroin Arrests — Dec. 8
State Police say two New York men were arrested along the Maine Turnpike early Tuesday morning after $25,000 worth of heroin was allegedly found in their car.
The arrests came after Trooper Robert Cejka stopped the car for speeding 90 mph along the northbound lane in Kennebunk about 2 a.m. Cejka's State Police dog, Maxx, is certified in drug detection and indicated drugs were in the car. A search found 152 grams of heroin hidden in the trunk.
Being held at the York County Jail are 28 year old Robert Hines and 30 year old Jason Viorla, both from the Bronx. They are charged with trafficking in heroin. Bail on both men was set at $20,000 each.
Meth Arrest — Dec. 7
Two men have been arrested after another meth lab has been discovered, this time inside a Jeep in Bar Harbor. This is the 52nd meth related incident in Maine this year — an record.
On Dec. 7, Bar Harbor Police received information which led them to believe that individuals were allegedly attempting to acquire materials commonly used to manufacture methamphetamine. As part of this investigation, officers located a Jeep Liberty in Bar Harbor which they believed was operated/occupied by the individuals who were attempting to acquire the materials to make the drug.
Bar Harbor officers located Zachary Rand hiding in the back seat of the vehicle. They also detained Joseph Schaefer, who was located nearby. Subsequently, both Rand and Schaefer were taken into custody by Bar Harbor Police. Rand was arrested on outstanding arrest warrants and Schaefer was charged with violating his conditions of release on an unrelated charge.
Bar Harbor officers found evidence of a methamphetamine manufacturing operation taking place inside the Jeep. They called MDEA to assist and investigators assigned to the MDEA Down East task force in Ellsworth responded.
MDEA agents secured the vehicle and had it towed to Bangor where it was searched Tuesday by the MDEA meth lab team. Found inside was evidence consistent with the manufacture of methamphetamine. In addition about a gram of meth was also located.
Zachary Rand, 25, of Southwest Harbor was charged with Class A, Aggravated Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (methamphetamine). This charge was aggravated due to a prior drug conviction. Joseph Schaefer, 23, of Otter Creek, ws charged with Felony, Class B Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (methamphetamine).
Both are currently being held at the Hancock County Jail. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection assisted the Bar Harbor Police Department and MDEA during the search of the Jeep.
MDEA will continue its investigation with Bar Harbor Police and more arrests are likely, the press release said.
