BELFAST — Belfast Maskers invites the public to audition for the musical The Secret Garden, book and lyrics by Marsha Norman, music by Lucy Simon, based on the Victorian novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

Auditions will be held at The Basil Burwell Community Theater, 17 Court Street in Belfast, Sunday, March 24, at 3 p.m., and Monday, March 25, at 6 p.m.; if necessary, call backs will be the following weekend, TBD.

Auditioners are encouraged to prepare a short piece to sing, either unaccompanied or with accompaniment provided by the singer. In lieu of such, singers will be asked to sing a simple, well-known song and scales. 

The stage director’s auditions will consist of cold reading from the script. Casting will be done by Music Director Deb Fournier and Stage Director Erik Perkins.

"The Secret Garden" opens on July 11 and runs Thursdays-Sundays for two weeks. Most rehearsals and all performances will be at The Basil Burwell Community Theater, 17 Court Street in Belfast.
 
No roles are paid. Most roles will call for some minimal dance but expertise is not a requirement. All vocals are demanding.

All roles are available:

Mary Lennox. Leading role. 10 year-old English girl raised by neglectful parents in India and sent to live with an uncle in Yorkshire upon their death. Female Soprano, age 9-16.

Archibald Craven. Lead. Hunchbacked widower still overcome by grief. Male Baritone age 30-50.

Dr. Neville Craven. Supporting. Brother of Archibald who manages the property. Male Baritone 30-50.

Martha. Supporting. Young chambermaid. Female Mezzo age 15-30.

Dickon Supporting. Martha’s brother, a Yorkshire lad with a kinship to Nature. Male Tenor 12-25

Lily. Supporting. Mary’s mother’s sister who died many years ago. Female Soprano age 20-40

Colin Craven. Supporting. Mary’s cousin, confined to his bed since birth. Boy Soprano age 9-16

Ben Weatherstaff Featured. An older gardener. Male Tenor. Age 45+

The following shall be considered “Dreamers”. They are an ensemble of ghosts, fellow travelers, and memories from Mary’s past life at that may 
double more than one role, form a chorus, and interact with the other characters, scenery—or even the audience:

Rose. Mary’s mother, Lily’s sister. Female Soprano age 20-45

Captain Lennox. Mary’s father. Male Tenor age 20

Alice. Female Soprano any age.

Holmes. Male Tenor any age.

Major Shelly. Male Tenor. Adult or older teen.

Mrs. Shelley. Alto/Mezzo-Soprano. Adult or older teen.

Claire. Alto/Mezzo-Soprano any age.

Fakir. An Indian mystic. Male Tenor any age.

Ayah. Mary’s Indian nanny. Soprano or Mezzo adult or teen.

Belfast Maskers’ next productions at The Basil Burwell Community Theater are the original musical Profile, opening March 15, and an evening of one-act plays, featuring The Vandal, opening May 3.
