Artwalk Waldoboro celebrates summer, June 27
WALDOBORO — Artwalk Waldoboro opens its doors Friday, June 27, from 4 - 7 p.m., for open studios, demonstrations, art exhibitions, and community information.
The night features events at 11 venues in Waldoboro: Gravedigger’s Daughter, Heywood Gallery, Perch Café & Bakery, Midcoast Conservancy, The Village Bookshop, Pinky Larue, Waldoboro Public Library, Open House of History, Waldoboro Historical Society, Waldoboro Inn, and the Waldo Theatre. See individual venues for extended times and specific event information.
The following event descriptions are provided by Gravedigger's Daughter.
-The Waldoboro Public Library is excited to feature the work of Marcia Drenzyk, in a pastel show titled, Quiet Moments, painting scenes “where the viewer might envision themselves in that location perhaps hearing a bird calling in the woods, or feeling the warm sun on their skin, smelling the scent of the ocean at low tide, or being surprised by the sudden rumble of an approaching thunderstorm.”
-Visit The Waldo Theatre for Beyond the Blue. Studio B presents artists Sharon Bailey, Peter Bruun, Ben Lussier, Mat O’Donnell, and Lauren Woodcock, each bringing lived experience of trauma, substance use, and emotional hardship to their creative work. This exhibition shares how they’ve transformed pain into meaning through art.
-Midcoast Conservancy is showcasing student artists from Midcoast Conservancy will be displaying work from Medomak Valley High School including photographs from Medomak Voices, a community project to help connect students to the Medomak River. On view are clay fish created in the ceramics class. Over at Heywood Gallery, guest artist Theodore (Ted) Nystrom is joining Anne Heywood. For over 50 years Nystrom has been painting en plein air in his native New England, Florida, and various European countries.
-Perch Bakery & Café is showing risograph prints by Jordyn Payne. Payne is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Somerville, MA. Her work deals with regionality. On view at Perch, check out her regional foods series. Stop in to discuss your favorite regional foods with Payne and see her other illustrations! Over at the Village Bookshop, pop in to see works by Elaine Abel, Peggy Hoganson, Jesse Brewer, and John and Nancy Hayden. They will have sculptures, fiber art, and paintings on view. While you are there, peruse the books and help support the Library!
-Gallup, featuring Roswell Angier and Susan Hawley, is in the gallery at Gravedigger’s Daughter, 882 Main Street. See their reflections on a cultural diaspora experienced while living in Gallup, New Mexico in the late 1970s and 80s. “Angier’s black and white documentary photographs and Hawley’s mixed media watercolors illustrate a world seemingly ordinary in everyday subject matter but powerfully expressive and complicated in content. Their accounts investigate worlds shaped by wealth and industry and the ubiquitous exploitation of indigenous peoples,” writes art historian Carol G.J. Scollans.
-Late night in the Village, visit The Waldoboro Inn and Ida’s Garden Bar at 5 pm, enjoy the garden, a glass of wine, and the performance art of Star & Stan, Kate Williams and Reed Rushes. Star & Stan are interested in questions around the commodification of identity. Their work unpicks the power structures that arise when certain identities and cultures are sold and repackaged as superior, elite, and more desirable against the backdrop of individualism and consumerism. Working together through fantasy is a way for Kate and Reed to reinterpret and process the world around them. Using live performance, drag, video and props they build the multifaceted world of Star & Stan. Tickets are $10-20 sliding scale at the door.
-Stop by the newly re-opened Custom House, now the base of the Open House of History and add your contributions to the community mapping project —your chance to mark meaningful places on the map of Waldoboro. Mark not just where something happened, but how it felt — the emotions, memories, and moments tied to this place. Explore displays on: Boundaries and Surveying and Connection and Ferrying across the Medomak River.
"Come add your voice, your story, your place," said Gravediggers Daughter, in a news release. "Let’s create a shared picture of how we feel and live in Waldoboro — together, at the Customs House and the Artwalk!"
Artwalk Waldoboro occurs on the 4th Friday of the month, from May-August. 2025 dates include May 23, June 27, July 25, and August 22.
