BELFAST — Arlene P. Whitney, 94, passed away July 14, 2013, at Harbor Hill in Belfast. Born in Castine May 4, 1919, she was the daughter of Mildred and Harold Perkins and was known to her family as "Mammie." She graduated from Lagrange High School in 1937 and married Stanley M. "Red" Whitney on her birthday in 1940 in Lagrange.

Arlene worked as a secretary and bookkeeper during her lifetime. She was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as worthy matron of Primose Chapter #152, where she had been a member for more than 50 years. She also served as district deputy, worthy grand matron of O.E.S. of Maine from 1981-1982, and was mother advisor of the Order of Rainbow Girls in Belfast from 1967-1971. In addition, she was a former member and past president of the Belfast Lioness Club.

The special things that will be missed will be Arlene's quick wit and her wonderful smile, Saturday mornings at the Swan Lake cottage with the smell of her homemade donuts, her special homemade chocolate ice cream and the secret whoopee pie recipe.

Arlene was quite a story teller, she wrote poems and would sing special songs to anyone, which would always bring a laugh. She made time to comfort family and friends whenever needed.

She will be remembered for her special quote, "I came, I did, I went."

Arlene was predeceased by her husband; her brother, Raymond Perkins; her sisters, Irma Heal, Leola Gould and Thelma Weaver; her son-in-law, William Hanscom; and her special friend, Helen Porter, who was like a sister to her.

Surviving are her three children, Barbara Hanscom, Gaynor Whitney and Terrell Whitney and his wife, Roxie; five grandchildren, Kimberly Bradeen, Lori Hunt, Jason Miller, Darcy Fritz and Jamie Miller; six great-grandchildren, Kaylen and Kilee Bradeen, Caleah Miller, Alex and Olivia Fritz, and Coby Campbell.

A graveside service will be held Friday, July 19, at 5 p.m. at Grove Cemetery in Belfast followed by a reception at 113 Swan Lake Ave. in Belfast. Memorial donations may be made to Waldo County Healthcare, Attn: Oncology Dept.; P.O. Box 287, Belfast, ME 04915; or to Cancer Care of Maine, EMHS Foundation, P.O. Box 931, Bangor, ME 04402-0931.
