Anne Waterman Cousens, obituary
SOUTH THOMASTON — Anne Waterman Cousens, 92, died peacefully at home, Friday, November 21, 2025. Born at home in South Thomaston, July 11, 1933, she was the daughter of Harry L. and Charlotte Trafton Waterman.
Anne attended the one room Bassick District School on Waterman’s Beach Road, Gould Academy in Bethel, and later graduated from Farmington State Teachers College in 1954. Anne’s first teaching job was at Walton Jr. High in Auburn.
In August of 1954, she married Nathaniel Cousnes, of Buxton, while he was in the Army. The following year, upon his discharge, they made their first home in Freeport where he held a teaching and coaching job. Anne taught one more year in Auburn before taking a job in Freeport.
The couple later moved to Wiscasset where they started their family. The family later lived in South Berwick and Dixfield before settling in South Thomaston in 1967. For several years, Anne continued teaching, working as a substitute teacher in local schools. Next she went to work for the Shepard family at Shepard Datsun. There she enjoyed the camaraderie and friendships she made with the crew. For 13 years she enjoyed social events, corvette trips and made lifelong friends.
In 1986 Anne and her family built a wharf and small lobster shack called Waterman’s Beach Lobster. For many years, Anne made all the pies and desserts, and served up lobster dinners with all the fixings, lobster rolls, crab rolls, steamed clams and all things seafood, with the help of her daughter and daughter-in-law. When she retired, she turned it over to the girls and they ran it for many more years. Following retirement, Anne and her husband spent nearly 30 years going to Florida, wintering at Manasota Key in Englewood. There they made many life-long friends from all over the country.
Family was Anne’s number one priority. Her home was the center of family gatherings, especially during all holidays, her door was always open to family and friends who needed a place to stay. The table was always prepared with more food than needed, fun was had by all, and traditions were made that are still caried on today.
Later in life, Anne and Nate enjoyed their log cabin in Beaver Cove at Moosehead Lake. They loved kayaking, swimming and socializing with guests and family. She and Nate always agreed that their greatest gift and blessing in life was the much loved, wonderful family that all lived within a mile or two, on family land that had been in the Waterman family since 1866. Anne and Nate shared 67 years of happily married bliss. Together they enjoyed watching their family grow and following the events of all their lives.
Anne will be sadly missed by all who loved her.
