Alexander ‘Sandy’ Wheeler Jr., obituary
YARMOUTH — Alexander “Sandy” Wheeler Jr., 91, of Yarmouth, passed away of natural causes Dec. 23, 2013.
He was born to the late Alexander and Agnes Wheeler on June 10, 1922, in Boston, Mass. He grew up in Boston and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and attended Dexter School and Milton Academy. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University in 1945. Sandy served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines.
Sandy and Marianne Hatch married in 1951 and settled in Dover, Mass. He worked as a trust real estate officer at First National Bank of Boston, and served as an assessor for the towns of Dover and Sherborn, Mass. After Marianne's death in 1960, Sandy re-married to Alice Stetson Kelly in 1960 and then to Christina Binney Greer in 1974.
Sandy was active in track and field and football at Harvard, and was a member of the Varsity and Owl clubs. He served as secretary of the Eastern Dog Club and volunteered for Meals on Wheels. His interests included sailing and traveling, but first and foremost he was a devoted and much-loved father and grandfather.
Sandy is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, James G. and Emlen Wheeler; two daughters, Frances Wheeler-Berta of Camden, married to Matthew, and Robin Bognuda of S. Antonino, Switzerland, married to Giulio. He is also survived by three step-children, Laura Moehrke of Wakefield, R.I., Christopher Greer of Pasadena Calif., and Sao Paolo Brazil, and Susan Gildar of Scottsdale Ariz. His nieces and nephews are Lyn Anderson of Wenham, Mass., Jake Wheeler of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Bill Wheeler of Nahant, Mass., and Jonathan Wheeler of Boston, Mass., Seeley Kaplan of Carnation, Wash., Lucy LeBert of Seattle, Wash., and Stephen LeBert of Corinth Miss. He was predeceased by his brother, William Wheeler; his sister, Agnes Wheeler; his daughter, Ellen Hayward Wheeler; and his step-son, Robert Greer.
Sandy's five grandchildren are Megan Kennedy, Hannah Berta, Clio Berta, Michelle Bognuda and Narisorn Bognuda. His step-grandchildren are Will and Sam Moehrke, Emily, Natalie and Holly Gildar, Robert, Timothy, Christina and Nicholas Greer, and Catherine, Christopher and Elizabeth Greer. They all had a special place in his heart.
A private burial service will be held at Highland Cemetery in Dover, Mass., Dec. 31, 2013. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels in your community, or to www.mowaa.org.
