No boats sank during the 2015 Belfast Harbor Fest’s annual National Boatbuilding Challenge held on the weekend of Aug. 14-16. However, several near collisions by competing rowers kept spectators cringing.

Along with crafting the boats on site, the five teams of two also had to provide homemade oars as gear for the water challenge. Some teams brought oars with rounded ends that slid smoothly within the round metal oar locks. Other teams brought oars glued together with rectangular slats of lumber. Add that to the fact that the race target was decided upon just after the boats were launched, and a recipe from grunts and shrieks was born.
