The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency arrested 10 people in connection with a heroin and cocaine ring in Dixfield. The arrests follow indictments last week by the Oxford County Grand Jury. Most of the arrests took place Oct. 18. MDEA said approximately 50-80 grams of heroin and 28 grams of cocaine base were smuggled into Maine weekly by the group before it was shut down earlier this year. One of those indicted is a former substitute teacher at Mountain Valley Middle School.

Drug agents said the investigation began this spring when MDEA began looking at substitute teacher Matthew Duka at Mountain Valley Middle School for allegedly selling heroin and crack cocaine in the community, according to a news release from the Maine Dept. of Public Safety. Agents found no evidence of any drug sales at the high school.

An undercover agent with the MDEA, Rumford and State Police purchased Heroin/Fentanyl from Duka in Mexico, the police release said. As the investigation continued, investigators learned that Duka was selling heroin and crack cocaine for two others, Angel Cabrera, of Mexico, and Kelvin Caceras, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, who were using a house at 21 Coolidge Road in Dixfield as their headquarters, police said. The house is owned by Jeffrey Waite, the release said.

Assisting arrests yesterday were police officers from Dixfield and Rumford , State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff's Office. All are expected to appear in Oxford County District Court in South Paris on Friday.
