Winterport motorcyclist dies following Belmont crash
BELMONT — On September 27, at 3 p.m., the Waldo County Dispatch Center received a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle and a car in Belmont. Deputy Kevin Littlefield responded to a motorcycle crash on the August Road in Belmont near the Fenwick Road intersection.
There, Littlefield learned that Michael Bennett, 72, of Winterport, had been traveling east and Alberna Bunker, 76, of Belmont, had been traveling west, both on the Augusta Road. The Ford Focus operated by Bunker began turning left onto the Fenwick Road but failed to yield the right of way to the motorcycle Mr. Bennett was operating.
He attempted to avoid the collision; however his motorcycle laid down, and he was ejected, according to a news release from the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office.
Mr. Bennett was transported by ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital but died as a result of the injuries he sustained.
At the time of the crash, he was not wearing a helmet. The crash was reconstructed by Sergeant Cody Laite and remains under investigation. Alcohol and speed are not believed to be contributing factors at this time.
