THOMASTON – For the folks of Thomaston, Independence Day expands far beyond parades and fireworks. Before the parade, celebrating a “Pet-riotic 4th,” dog owners strutted their canine companions inside an obstacle ring near Lura Libby School.

Few of the dogs showed interest in entering the tube, and not one jumped through the hoop. Yet, no one seemed to mind.

Host Naomi Howe introduced each owner/canine team and a few facts about the dog’s breed. Loyal Biscuit provided treats for all participants.

As a finale, a cat owner brought her leashed,13-year-old Siamese feline into the ring.

“We’re trying to get more of a mix of animals at this event,” Howe told the crowd.

The cat was not impressed.

Following the parade, children returned to the same spot of grass to test their giant bubble-making skills.

Smiles all around.
