Stella gifts Camden Snow Bowl one final stellar weekend

Monday, March 20, 2017 - 02:43 pm

It was a Bluebird Saturday at the Camden Snow Bowl, followed by a perfect Sunday, over the weekend of March 18 and 19. The special encore weekend came courtesy of the midweek blizzard, Stella, which dumped 18 inches onto Ragged Mountain.

Trails filled with laughter, and whoops and hollers and skiers and boarders cut their last smooth curves through the new snow. Thanks to that blizzard, the entire mountain – all the trails from east to west and top to bottom – remained open until the last hurrah, at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 19.

Snow Bowl Director Beth Ward reported that a steady business kept the Snow Bowl’s cash register jingling, with $12,000 in net revenue on Saturday and $8,000 on Sunday.

Skiers came from the immediate region, as well as from out of state. One Texas family arrived for a full day on the mountain, and another couple from Florida were happy to spend some of their time in Maine skiing the fresh snow.

The bought tickets for the day and rented gear, or they pulled out their season passes, and came for just a few hours. The temperatures were winterlike; still, by the end of Sunday, some of the intrepid were take Mussel Ridge and the jumps at the terrain park at full speed, and down-clothed to T-shirts, bandanas and ski pants — except for the one man taking to the trails in his kilt.

The Encore Weekend filled out the 60 operational days that the Snow Bowl had pledged to provide to passholders, and in the end, no one was disappointed. Ragged Mountain closed out its 2016-2017 alpine ski season with flair, and nothing but smiles.
