Breaking up the ice in Rockport

The Rockland-based, 65-foot ice breaking Cutter Tackle broke and cleared ice in Rockport Harbor today, Jan. 4. The crew traveled to Rockport from U.S. Coast Guard Station Rockland after commercial fishermen asked the Coast Guard to help break up the ice. Cold temperatures over the last several days has quickly skimmed the harbor with ice, and by Friday, fishing vessels were unable to safely transit out of the harbor.
The Tackle is a small harbor tug, one of 11 such cutters in Coast Guard service along the east coast. The cutters were built between 1962 and 1967. They are employed only on the east coast, from Maine to Virginia.
The Coast Guard conducts icebreaking services to assist vessels and communities in emergency situations and facilitate essential commercial maritime activities in the Great Lakes and Northeast.
