Old time New Orleans jazz to shake Rockport Opera House, July 23
Legacy Rockport is sponsoring a concert at the Rockport Opera House featuring the State Street Traditional Jazz Band. Proceeds from the concert will be dedicated to the Rockport Public Library. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 23.
The State Street Traditional Jazz Band pays homage to the authentic origins of music birthed over 100 years ago at the turn of the 20th Century. These enchanting sounds were heard then in New Orleans and throughout the Louisiana Delta region. Following World War I, jazz moved north out of New Orleans, and in the course of the move it inevitably began to change. Yet many musical greats kept it alive such as the Original Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong, "Kid" Thomas Valentine, Sweet Emma Barrette, the Humphrey Brothers, etc. Sadly, today those music legends have passed, but the State Street Traditional Jazz Band is dedicated to playing, preserving and keeping this music alive!
John T. Page, founder and manager of the State Street Traditional Jazz Band, studied and played trumpet since age 7. In the early 1970s as a Maine Maritime Academy graduate, while shipping out of the Port of New Orleans, he was thrilled and captivated by the sounds of the 'Original' Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He is dedicated to keeping this original music alive, and the enthusiastic response to the band’s appearances all around Maine show his success in doing so.

Legacy Rockport is an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization established in 2009 for the purposes of enhancing the general quality of the Town of Rockport; supporting the fine and performing arts; establishing an educational endowment for the benefit of Rockport taxpayers; providing and maintaining outdoor recreation opportunities; and advancing the general quality of public education.
