OWLS HEAD — Jon Roger Thompson Sr., 72, died unexpectedly June 6, 2015, with his loving family at his side, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Born in Rockland on Feb. 14, 1943, he was the son of John and Gertrude Chambers Thompson. Educated locally, he was a 1961 graduate of Rockland High School.

On March 20, 1971, Jon married the love of his life and soul mate, Charlotte St. Clair in Thomaston, wed by her grandfather George Woodward. Together they made their home in Owls Head.

He was a lifelong cook and loved preparing large meals for his family; even after cooking all day at work. It was well known that his boys were the best-fed kids in school, as they often woke up to a hugely prepared breakfast.

Jon looked forward to beach combing with his sons every morning before driving them to school. This was a time he cherished, building memories and spending time together. He had a great sense of humor, only understood by immediate family. He also had an immense amount of love to give to his family and their pets, always caring more about their needs than his own.

Reading, gardening and traveling all over the state of Maine with his wife were some of his greatest passions.

He took great joy in the little things in life and nature. He could often be found protecting a bird nest, searching tidal pools; and each year he picked up a new horse chestnut to carry for good luck.

Every year since his marriage, he planted one chestnut in hopes it would grow, finally finding success with a chestnut tree now 6-feet-tall, awaiting its first chestnut.

The most important thing to Jon was his family. Not a day went by that he didn't stop by his son's shop, Genuine Auto, to say hello and help wherever he could. He spent time with his wife and two sons every day, and greatly enjoyed the time he spent with his grandkids. They were constantly in his thoughts. Jon often spoke of fond memories he had with his nieces and nephews during their childhood and times he spent teasing them. It was always a great pleasure for him to run into them while out shopping. The knowledge of the great love that Jon had for his family was deeply rooted in their hearts and their lives will be forever changed without him.

Predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Freda Vose and Sandra Thompson; and his brothers, Arnold Thompson and Wayne Thompson; Jon is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Charlotte Thompson of Owls Head; his son, Jon Thompson Jr., wife Rebecca, and grandchildren, Owen, Trevor, Thomas and Evan, all of Warren; his son, Jason Thompson, wife Sue and granddaughter Alyssa all of Nobleboro; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jon's family has chosen to remember his life privately. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Pope Memorial Humane Society, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
