American singer-songwriter and musician ANAIS MITCHELL, described as the "queen of modern folk music," presents her current release and tour Child Ballads, an award-winning collection of epic old Celtic and British Isles ballads, in collaboration with JEFFERSON HAMER. Opening the show will be HEATHER MALONEY, a rising star with a startlingly soulful voice and songwriting that explores themes of spirituality and transformation; and SARA HALLIE RICHARDSON, A Portland, Maine based singer/songwriter who performs and writes music with folk, indie and electronic styles. Singer-songwriter and actress Crystal Bowersox's rich amalgam of blues, country, folk and rock makes her one of the most dynamic young voices in music to come along in years. The 2010 American Idol runner-up has performed alongside a wide spectrum of musicians, from Harry Connick Jr., Joe Cocker, and Alanis Morrisette, to Michael Franti, John Popper and BB King. She will be playing Patsy Cline in the upcoming Broadway production of Always, Patsy Cline. Seth Glier is a seasoned troubadour at a young age, averaging 250+ performances annually, sharing the stage with performers as diverse as James Taylor, Ani DiFranco, Martin Sexton, and Emmylou Harris. Meditative and earthy, Niger-based musician BOMBINO conjures the expansiveness of the Sahara landscape with captivating vocals, trancelike guitar playing, and evocative rhythms. Born as Goumar Almoctar in a nomadic Tuareg encampment, he came of age during a time of political upheaval, fleeing with his family to Algeria and returning seven years later to take on music professionally. The iconic Western swing band, led by 6'7" frontman Ray Benson (guitar, vocals), has spent more than 40 years honing its energetic, evolving, highly crowd-pleasing sound! Current bandmembers are Peter Schwarz (steel Guitar, saxaphone), Katie Holmes (fiddle, vocals), Dan Walton (piano, vocals), David Miller (bass, vocals), and David Sanger (drums). Now based in Austin, Texas, they have won nine Grammy Awards for their country, western swing, honky tonk, and Texas country music. Mike & Ruthy are one of acoustic America’s most revered musical duos. Three New England bands on-the-rise share the Strand stage and rock the house: DARLINGSIDE clustersfour distinct voices around a single microphone, effortlessly draw audiences into their lush, dynamic musical world. The band’s sound, characterized by classical strings, tight vocal arrangements, bluegrass and rock instrumentation, and smart lyricism, is the product of complete collaboration among the four close friends. Each song features a new combination of instruments and textures, pulling heavily from folk, retro-pop, barbershop, and chamber music. The GHOST OF PAUL REVERE is Maine's holler-folk band. Building their songs around powerful three-part harmonies, energetic performances, and a non-traditional way of interpreting traditional American music, THE GHOST draws from a broad array of influences including Elmore James and the Beatles, to Tom Waits and more. The GHOST writes powerful songs, built on melody and energy, from folk to foot-stomping bluegrass. Their live show has quickly attained legendary status, with fans traveling from the most remote corners of Maine to catch the band on their way up. The BALLROOM THIEVES take the sincere, narrative blueprint of folk music and infuse it with the attitude of rock, the soul of blues, and the sweat and fervor of a revival tent. Garnering regional and national acclaim for both of their releases to date, the THIEVES have been branching out from their native Boston. Their energy, passion, and songwriting craft earning them national touring spots with established bands such as the Lone Bellow, Dispatch, Little Green Cars, the Wheeler Brothers, and Houndmouth, among others. The MAINE YOUTH ROCK ORCHESTRA is a program in part with the Maine Academy of Modern Music that provides orchestral string students ages 12-18 the opportunity to work along side and perform with Maine-based bands and artists in an alternative setting. Beginning in December 2013, MYRO has achieved strong recognition across New England as a revolutionary youth orchestra program, and is the only one of its kind in the nation. MYRO has worked with artists such as Spose, The Ballroom Thieves, Lyle Divinsky, The Ghost of Paul Revere, The Mallett Brothers Band, and many others from Maine and New England. MYRO is currently based out of Portland and continues to grow as an educational ensemble for students to be expressive and creative with their musical talents, providing opportunities that students would otherwise never experience.
