March to protect local Post Offices, May 17 in Rockland
ROCKLAND — Inspired by other communities who have done this, Dora Lievow has initiated an action on May 17.
"Many cuts made by the Postmaster General, a Trump appointee from his first term, have already stressed our Post Office workers," said Lievow, in a news release. "The current regime is advocating further cuts, closing local branches and privatization."
For two weeks in Chapman Park, Lievow gathered many signatures for a thank you card to be delivered to the Rockland postal workers on Saturday, May 17. Audacity members will gather at the Rockland Post Office at 11:30 a.m., May 17, and present the card and show support before the P. O. closes at noon. Following the11:30 a.m. rally, participants will march down the sidewalks of downtown Rockland to participate in the regular 12 Noon demonstration.
Noon: Demonstration in Chapman Park (corner of Park and Main in Rockland).
"This is our biggest weekly happening, with 200-400 participants and there's lots going on," said Lievow, in a news release.
Lievow listed the following activities expected during the noon demonstration:
- We will sing with boldness.
- We will give away free buttons.
- We will collect food and hygiene items for the AIO food pantry that has been stressed by recent federal budget cuts.
- We will demonstrate our indignation, our resolve, our values, and our courage in standing up for them.
- We will be joyful where bigots hate, we will be positive where Donald Trump seeks to destroy, and we will be nonviolent in our movement as the agents of the new dictatorship revel in their infliction of pain, injury, disease, torture, and death upon the most vulnerable.
