Elmer R. Witham, obituary
OWLS HEAD — Elmer R. Witham passed away on March 3, 2025, at his home in Owls Head, Maine, surrounded by family.
Born on February 16, 1940 to the late Clayton R. Witham and Constance M. Gardner, Elmer grew up in Rockland, attended local schools, and enjoyed a full social life until his later years. He began working as a lobsterman at a young age, and remained a lobsterman all of his working life, fishing the grounds around Large Green Island until health issues forced him into retirement. He never lost his drive and passion for lobstering. Even when his health no longer permitted him to work, he always followed the local lobster trade, catching up with the news of fellow lobstermen, and keeping an eye on the weather.
Elmer was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and had many lifelong friends. He was a dedicated, but laughably pessimistic Patriots and Red Sox fan, and he was a lifetime Elks club member. For many years he enjoyed taking long, annual vacations to the island of Saint-Martin where he developed lasting friendships he would rekindle every year.
He was predeceased by his parents Clayton and Connie; his stepmother, Jennie Witham; his stepfather, Edward Harriman; and his beloved dog, Bentley (who will forever remain a gentleman in Elmer’s eyes).
Elmer is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sheila Witham; his sons, Clayton and Kevin Witham; Kevin’s wife Joyce Witham; his brothers, Eugene Witham and Alan Post; and his grandchildren, Alexander Witham-Gradert, Nicholas Witham, and Audrey Witham.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
