June Marie Martin, obituary
VINALHAVEN — June Marie Martin ‘Junebug’, 88, passed away peacefully March 2, 2025, at Ivan Calderwood Homestead Vinalhaven, with her family at her side.
June was born on April 5, 1936, in New Harbor, and lived most of her childhood on Matinicus Island. She met Benjamin L. Martin, Jr. and moved ‘from one rock pile to another’ to Vinalhaven prior to their marriage on October 6, 1956.
Fondly known as Junebug by everyone she knew, she was known for her LOVE of family and showing them off through all of her photo albums and pictures, weekend sleepovers with her grandchildren, her peanut butter fudge and pie, her love of dirty jokes, picking crabmeat when folks dropped off crabs, doing puzzles, playing cards and bingo, her strong dislike of the color purple, and her light feet on the dance floor.
She attended school on Matinicus, and was very proud when she received her GED from Vinalhaven High School. June was a Founding member of the Webster-Beckman-Smith VFW Auxiliary on Vinalhaven and attended Pleasant River Chapel.
Surviving are her four children, Doris (Billy) Warren, Ethel (Peter) Jones, Donna Jean (Jeff) Smith all of Vinalhaven, Maine, and George (Sarah) Martin of Searsmont. She was known as Gram/Grammie/Grammie Moosey by her ten grandchildren, Reagan, Kristin, Caitlyn, Kimberly, Jessica, Heather, James, Morgan, Ryan, and Tyler; and her six great-grandchildren, Payton, Hadley, Brynlee, Arianna, Maverick and Ryder. She also leaves behind a very special friend, Ruthie Philbrook.
June was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin; siblings, Marjorie, Phyllis, Verna, James, and Walter; and her grandson Collin.
A graveside service is planned for the spring at Brown’s Head Cemetery, Vinalhaven, Maine, and will be announced at a later time.
June and Benjamin were avid CB’ers in the day, communicating with folks near and far. Her handle was Junebug and she was known for her signoff. Until we see you again, Junebug Clear.
