Activist group Audacity emphasizes 2025 Camden Conference's theme: 'Democracy Under Threat'
CAMDEN – A short protest by the Audacity Cat, an activist group in the Midcoast, greeted attendees of the Camden Conference exiting the Camden Opera House just after noon, Feb. 22.
Kendray Rodriguez, an organizer for the Audacity — formally known as "The Audacity: Creative Action Together" — and Thomaston resident said, “We are here to show solidarity with the folks of the Camden Conference.”
“The conference topic this year [Democracy Under Threat] is basically the death of democracy, “ she said. “We’re here to show solidarity with what they are talking about and to hopefully find some allies and new members for our movement.”
The Audacity, consisting of Midcoast residents, uses art in all its various forms to bring awareness to what’s going on in the political climate, and to resist, members said.
While Camden's action was underway, another Audacity group was in Rockland, where Camden Conference attendees were likewise exiting the Strand Theater. There, Audacity sang protest songs.
Dave Morrison, manager of the Camden Opera House, was outside meeting with Audacity members before conference attendees began exiting. His goal was to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
Two members of the Camden Police Department were also on hand to encourage pedestrians along sidewalks to keep moving and the streets clear of people so as not to impede traffic flow.
Morrison said the Camden Opera House was aware that The Audacity was planning to be present at mid-day.
“We heard some rumblings that something was going to be happening and then we heard a little more,” he said. “We’ve been able to have a great conversation with these folks, so we can work together to help them get their First Amendment rights and help the folks inside come and go. It’s a win, win.”
