Camden Conference event screens "The Search for the Palace Letters"
ROCKPORT — The Rockport Public Library continues its Camden Conference Community Events Series with a screening of the timely 2024 documentary The Search for the Palace Letters on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 12 p.m.
This compelling film examines a crucial moment in democratic governance through the lens of Australia's constitutional crisis. The film runs 59 minutes and will be followed by audience discussion. This event is free and open to all.
The documentary chronicles Professor Jenny Hocking's landmark legal battle against the Australian Government and Queen Elizabeth II to uncover the truth behind one of democracy's most controversial episodes: the 1975 dismissal of Australia's democratically elected Whitlam Government. At its core, the film raises vital questions about democratic accountability, transparency in governance, and the tension between monarchical power and democratic institutions.
For over forty years, these critical historical documents remained sealed under royal embargo, highlighting enduring questions about democratic oversight and the public's right to access information about decisions affecting their governance. The High Court of Australia's historic 2020 decision to release the "Palace Letters" represents a significant victory for democratic transparency and sets a precedent for accountability in democratic systems worldwide.
This presentation is hosted by the Rockport Public Library and offered as a free community event in anticipation of the 38th Annual Camden Conference – Democracy Under Threat: A Global Perspective, February 21-23, 2025, live at the Camden Opera House and live-streamed to the Strand Theatre in Rockland, Lunt Auditorium in Falmouth, and to homes and classrooms worldwide.
