Penobscot Bay Singers holiday concerts in Searsport, Belfast, Camden
The Penobscot Bay Singers will present their concert, Music of Christmas and Peace, on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Searsport First Congregational Church, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 15, at St Francis of Assisi, in Belfast, at 3 p.m.
A special fundraising concert will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m., at the John Street United Methodist in Camden. This final seasonal concert by the Penobscot Bay Singers will be raising funds for Kindness Community Market - Supporting Local Food Insecurities and promoting the theme that the community comes together to help each other out, not only at holiday times, but throughout the year.
The Penobscot Bay Singers are directed by Kimberly Murphy and accompanied by joani mitchell. The choral ensemble of more than 50 singers will join their voices to present familiar music of the season, plus a few new selections. Of special note will be an arrangement by Ruth E. Schram that sings of peace in three different languages: Hebrew, Latin, and English. Featured on this arrangement will be a small ensemble of middle school students from Lincolnville. They will join with the Pen Bay Singers, representing a community of members aged 12 to 80, singing for the need for peace in the world. Also embracing the theme of peace and of doing good work in the community is a new arrangement by Dan Forrest that features the poem by Howard Thurman, “The Work of Christmas.”
Familiar tunes will include John Rutter’s “Angel’s Carol” and “Silent Night,” plus an upbeat, dancing arrangement of “Joy to the World” by Ian Crawford. The group will be joined by harpist, The Rev. Dr. Regina Christianson, for two selections: the French carol, “Sing We Now of Christmas,” and a lovely setting of e.e. Cummings’ “Little Tree” by Steve Heitzeg. Franz Biebl’s arrangement of “Ave Maria” will feature three guest performers: Emily Mitchell, Galadria Scattaloni, and Trey Freeman.
