Shrek opens tonight at the Strom in Rockport

ROCKPORT — It’s tough being an ogre. Add a donkey who won’t shut up, half-pint prince, a fire breathing dragon and a princess who needs rescuing and you have all the ingredients for a first-rate musical. Shrek The Musical opens Friday night, Nov. 8, in the Strom Auditorium at CamdenHills Regional High School.
Shrek The Musical, based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, brings the story of everyone's favorite ogre to life on the stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre — not a handsome prince — shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Shrek The Musical is part romance, part twisted fairy tale and irreverent fun for everyone.
Shrek is played by Jacob Corney; Princess Fiona by Anna Gambell; Donkey by Jonah Carter; and Prince Farquaad by Duncan Hall.
Doreen Duke is Shrek’s producer and works in special ed at the high school. I asked her to highlight the production.
“The challenge I think has been for Jacob to wear the prosthetics,” she said. “He’s doing a fantastic job. The whole cast is energetic and they have great voices and the show is a lot of fun. Out of five stars, I would give it 10.”
Catching up with Shrek (Jacob Corney) backstage, I asked him what it was like to wear all the prosthetics to become Shrek.
“It’s a lot of fun, but it’s super hot in here,” said Corney. “It’s really heavy, but it’s a lot of fun. I’m bouncing around up there and it’s all a good time. The fat suit weighs a lot, but it’s half the weight of the head piece, which weighs maybe 10 to 15 pounds. And you know, when you send off that college resume and it says you were typecast as an orge, it’s going to get you in for sure.”
