On Nov. 7, consider strain on an already overburdened community
There is never a good time to borrow $154 million dollars, but with inflation soaring, now is an especially bad time.
RSU 40 wants to borrow more money, which over the life of a 25-year loan at prevailing interest rates (assuming a 6% rate) will cost around $154 million, much more than the $81 million figure that will be identified on the November 7 ballot for voters in Warren, Washington, Waldoboro, Friendship and Union.
The cost of groceries, fuel, and insurance are surging and many people are struggling under this heavy weight.
In Warren, 79% of property taxes currently go to the school district, but I do not recall hearing a word of appreciation to the taxpayers.
Last year’s budget for the school district was over $32 million, which is an extraordinary commitment to our schools, but it seems the cup is never full. To be clear, with budgets of this size, the schools should not be feeling deprived and the students should feel valued.
Before asking taxpayers to borrow more money, please be mindful of the financial hardship placed on many families; we just cannot handle much more. When voting on November 7, please consider the strain on an already overburdened community.
