BELFAST — Norman Bowen, 92 of Belfast, passed peacefully at home on Thursday May 21 with his wife of 72 years, Charlotte, by his side.

Norman was born in Belfast, Maine on March 29,1928 to Ina (Giggey) and Harry Bowen.

He graduated from Crosby High School in 1945 and enlisted in the Seabees soon after. He started Bowen’s Grocery Store with his mother and was known by many as “The Mailman,” deputy and dispatcher, and most recently, the coffee man at Bowen’s Tavern, now owned by his grandson Mike and his wife, Bridget.

Norman served in World War II, Guam, in the Seabees and wore his hat and carried his cane with pride. He loved to golf, was a past president of the Belfast Curling Club, and always had a story to share.

He was predeceased by both of his parents; his brother, Harry Arnold Bowen; and his grandson Gregory (Greg) Bowen.

Norman is survived by his four children, Gail Berry and her husband Dave, Michael Bowen and his wife Wendy, Annette Bowen and her husband Craig Underhill and Bradley Bowen and his wife Karen; six grandchildren, Monica, Mike, Jess, Kelly, Sarah and Dan; and three great grandchildren Ben, Harley and Zac.

We will have a Celebration of his Life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Shriner's Hospital or our local Hospice program that supported our family during his final days and made his passing as pain free and peaceful as possible.

Norman loved to drive his scooter to the Tavern and I am certain he will be waiting for us with a pot of hot coffee (or some of his cheap Sangria).

Arrangements are under the care of Riposta Funeral Home in Belfast. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.ripostafh.com
