“Women in the Cockpit” talk celebrates two trailblazing aviators
OWLS HEAD — The Owls Head Transportation Museum presents “Women in the Cockpit” as part of its Winter Adult Lecture Series. This special event, taking place Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m., celebrates the accomplishments of two extraordinary pilots whose stamina and courage were integral on the home front during World War II.
Attendees will hear from family members of Lillian Lorraine Yonally and Nancy Harkness Love, who will share the pilots’ incredible stories of defending our country and breaking barriers for female military aviators.
Celebrating Two Trailblazing Aviators
● Lillian Lorraine Yonally: Presented by family member and OHTM volunteer Lynn Yonally, Lillian’s life story is one of remarkable spirit and resilience. During WWII, she served in the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), flying aircraft across the Unit States to support the war effort. Beyond piloting, she tested and repaired planes, help train male pilots, and formed a close-knit community of female aviators who challenged social norms and paved the way for future generations of women in aviation. After the war, Lillian continued to advocate for the WASP legacy, living a life marked by creativity, curiosity, and a commitment to empowering others.
● Nancy Harkness Love: Presented by OHTM volunteer pilot Nick Knobil, Nancy’s pioneering career began at age 16. During WWII, her expertise led her to propose and organize the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), demonstrating that women could effectively ferry a broad range of military aircraft—including fighters bombers—across the country. Her leadership helped pave the way for the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), influencing the future of female participation in aviati and earning her a reputation for her remarkable piloting skills and dedication to national service.
