Windjammers move to 3-0 with Saturday win at MRC

ROCKPORT – After the home opener Saturday was over the Camden Hills hockey team is sitting where not many people would have thought they would be this early in the season at 3-0.
Camden Hills has outscored its opponents 24-10 in the first three games including the 6-2 win over Hampden Academy Saturday at the Midcoast Recreation Center.
The Windjammers took a 2-1 first period lead and increased it to 4-2 at the end of the second period and finished off the game with the 6-2 win.
"Tonight was a well earned win, we had to play solid two way hockey," said Camden Hills coach Karl Enroth. "The final score does not indicate how close the game was. Hamden Academy was aggressive throughout the game and at times pinning us down in our end. The key was we just played hard through it keeping their shooting chances to the outside".
Scoring for Camden Hills were, Jack Orne and Stephen Hand with two goals each; and James Annis and Simon Lydon, one each. Hand, Grayson Szumilas (2), Orne, Matt Prescott, Jonah Cameron and parker Lawson had assists.
Jet Magri was in goal for the Windjammers where he had 17 saves on 19 shots for the win. Cody Varney was in goal for Hampden Academy where he had 22 saves on 28 shots.
Camden Hills was 1-for-4 in power play opportunities while Hampden was 0-for-2. The Windjammers had three minor penalties for six minutes in the box, while Hampden had six minor for 12 minutes.
In the first period Annis got Camden Hills going with a goal about three minutes into the game.
Hampden Academy pinned Camden Hills in their end several times during the period, but Camden Hills managed to escape without being scored on.
Hampden Academy applied heavy pressure at the four minute mark with Camden Hills caught on a long shift. The Windjammers broke the pressure as Orne skated into a mid ice pass from Lydon to give the Windjammers a 2-0 lead . The Broncos responded 52 seconds later with a blistering slap shot from Joshua Kocik to cut the margin to 2-1 at the end of the period.
The second period saw Camden Hills convert on their first power play opportunity of the game as Szumilas and Lydon took advantage on a 2x1 odd man rush to score giving Camden Hills a 3-1 lead.
Hampden quickly cut the margin to 3-2 scoring just 9 seconds later off the face-off. Both teams skated hard trying to get the key next goal. Stephen Hand fired a hard shot from the right face off circle that surprises the Broncos goalie, Cody Varney, and Camden Hills takes a two goal lead into the final period.
In the final period Hand scored his second goal of the game to give the Windjammers a three goal cushion. Camden Hills buckled down in their defensive end as Hampden continued to apply some heavy pressure at times, but could not get any prime scoring chances. Orne added a late goal toward the end of the period to cap the scoring 6-2.
"Stephen Hand scored a couple important goals that gave our team a much needed cushion never allowing Hampden to get the momentum," said coach Enroth. "Jet Magri was again solid in net making the saves he needed to make to keep Hampden from getting back into the game"
