WALDOBORO — Join Midcoast Conservancy for a nature walk focusing on common lichens with Maine Master Naturalist volunteers Jane Harrison and Kit Pfeiffer, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., at Peter’s Pond Preserve, in Waldoboro.

“Peter’s Pond Preserve is ideal to see many kinds of lichens - on trees, logs, soil and the rock ledges overlooking the pond,” said Midcoast Conservancy, in a news release. “Additionally, the trails host a great diversity of environments – from saltwater and freshwater marsh, to freshwater streams and pond, to fields and forest. This diversity and abundance of the wetlands on the preserve create excellent habitat for a wide range of wildlife, including lichens.”

Peter’s Pond Preserve was originally part of a larger, 51-acre parcel formerly owned for generations by the Robie family. In 2011, the DIY Network, a home improvement cable television network, purchased the Robie family farmhouse and surrounding property for the sixth season of their interactive home building series. In January 2012, DIY Network donated 30 acres of land property to Medomak Valley Land Trust (MVLT).

The pond is part of the headwaters of Eastern Broad Cove, and is a beloved local swimming hole, according to Midcoast Conservancy. Dramatic granite cliffs rise above the 12 acre pond, with blueberries growing out of the rocky ledge. At 60 feet deep, the pond stays cool and refreshing late into the summer. 800 feet of shoreline is now conserved and open to the public to visit in perpetuity via the preserve’s trails.

Peter’s Pond Preserve shares a parking lot with the Dutch Neck Community Center, just off of Route 32 on Dutch Neck Road. Hikers will be gathering in the parking lot before heading down the trail. Please note that there are no restrooms at the preserve.

The hike will be approximately two miles, with some steep and muddy sections of trail, and uneven terrain with rocks and roots. Sturdy shoes, water, and bug repellant are recommended. Anyone with questions about the hike or about Midcoast Conservancy’s recreational programming can email landmcc@midcoastconservancy.org.

No registration required.
