Virginia H. Burrows, obituary

BELFAST — Virginia H. Burrows, 88, passed away October 19, 2019 in Belfast. She was born in Belfast on December 7, 1930 to Filmore and Mona (Gurney) Hanson.

She attended schools in Belfast and Portland graduating from Covina Union High School in Covina, California in 1949. Virginia returned to Belfast in 1949 and went to work at New England Telephone Co in 1950. She was later transferred to Southern New England Telephone Company in 1959 working in Hartford and Manchester, Connecticut offices until 1979.

In 1963 while working at the Hartford office, Virginia was selected from 200 telephone operators to be given the honor of receiving a white head-set for "Miss Voice and Courtesy." She worked for the telephone company for 19 1/2 years.

Virginia was a Girl Scout and belonged to the YMCA since 1984 joining the local Belfast YMCA in 2001. She loved roller skating, dancing and the summer street dances in downtown Belfast. While living in Portland, she attended Emmanuel Baptist Church and later joined First Church in Belfast as her home church.

She was predeceased by both parents and is survived by cousins, Vivian Orcutt of Whitman, Massachusetts, Peter Hanson of Belfast, Michael Hanson and wife Theresa of Florida, and David Marshall of Belfast; niece, Christina Burrows of Lyden, Washington; several distant cousins; very close friends, Mary Grant, Tanya Butterfield and many other friends in Belfast and various parts of the United States.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 2, at 1 p.m., at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast, with Rev. Kate Winters and Rev. Joel Krueger officiating. Music will be provided by Lincoln Blake.

Those who wish may make donations to either Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association or Waldo County Hospital, Oncology Department.
