Vertene W. Carter, 94, formerly of Belfast, Maine passed peacefully from this life on January 11, 2022. She was a beloved local artist, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend.

Born Vertene Whittaker Brown on December 18, 1927, in Cambridge Massachusetts, to Irving and Vertene Marsan Brown.

Survived by son, David Sullivan (wife Sandra) of Bristol, Rhode Island; daughter Nanci Sullivan of Sebago, Maine; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Predeceased in life by her husband, Harold Carter of Belfast, Maine; daughter Joyce Eicher of Reading, Massachusetts; son, Steven Sullivan of Epping, New Hampshire; and brothers Richard and Irving Brown.

Vertene began her studies at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, specializing in both oils and watercolors. Thereafter, throughout her life, she continued refining her skills and adopting new techniques, such as plein air painting. She loved sharing her passion and knowledge of her craft and took pride in inspiring others to reach their full artistic potential. She particularly enjoyed gathering amongst other artists at various art getaways on local islands and Downeast and sharing her great love of life, art, cooking, reading, and nature with her family and many friends.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
