Kaleb Campbell was arrested Friday night, March 18, by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and taken to the Knox County Jail where he remained until his hearing. 

Judge John Martin, who presided at the hearing, set bail at $5,000 cash with no third-party bail allowed. As of March 22, Campbell has not yet posted bail and remains at the Knox County Jail.

Attorney Christopher MacLean of Camden is representing Campbell.

Campbell will be on supervised release as a condition of his bail and will be on house arrest except for work, medical or legal appointments or other situations as approved by a Maine Pretrial contract. He cannot use alcohol, drugs and possess firearms and dangerous weapons and will be subject to random searches.

According to the affidavit filed in court by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, North Haven Deputy Josh Lemoi responded to a report at approximately 9:21 p.m. on March 18 of a man who had been badly beaten. When the deputy arrived at the scene, which was a neighboring residence of where the assault occurred, North Haven emergency medical services were treating the victim.

Vinalhaven Deputy Chad Abbott and Deputy Jacob Labo also responded to assist Lemoi.

Deputies said the victim had sustained extensive head injuries and they were serious enough so he was vomiting and losing consciousness.  

According to the affidavit, Campbell and the victim were working on fishing gear and drinking. The assault occurred after the victim showed Campbell a photo of a naked woman who was someone that Campbell knew. Campbell got angry and repeatedly punched the victim in the face. 

Campbell told police that the victim would not leave his property so he fired his 9mm handgun in the air three times. He also admitted to striking the victim.  

The victim said that Campbell told him at one point to “run or he was going to shoot him.” He ran from the scene to a neighboring home and police were called.

Police took Campbell into custody and he was transported from North Haven by the Maine Marine Patrol to Rockland and the Knox County Jail.

Campbell will appear in court again on June 16 for a dispositional conference.

NORTH HAVEN — One 19-year-old male from North Haven is in critical condition in a Bangor hospital and another male, 22, has been arrested and charged Aggravated Assault (class B) and Terrorizing (class D).

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kaleb Campbell, 22, of North Haven, March 18, and transported him to the Knox County Jail where he is currently being held due to bail being set at No Bail Allowed, according to the Sheriff’s Office, in a March 19 news release.

Meanwhile, the victim, also of North Haven, was flown via LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor, where he is currently in critical condition and in the intensive care unit, the S.O. said.

“On Friday, March 18, at approximately 9:21 p.m., the Knox County Sheriff’s Office received a report of an assault where a male had been badly beaten on North Haven Island,” the release said. “North Haven Deputy Josh Lemoi responded to a neighboring residence where North Haven EMS were tending to the victim. Deputies found that a 19 year old male from North Haven had sustained extensive head injuries from the suspect, Kaleb Campbell, 22, of North Haven. The head injuries were serious enough that the victim was vomiting and would lose consciousness. Vinalhaven Deputy Chad Abbott and Deputy Jacob Labo responded to assist Deputy Lemoi.”

Deputies made contact with Campbell, who admitted to striking the victim and to firing off a handgun, the Sheriff’s Office said. No one is known to have been struck by any gunfire, the release said.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Deputy Labo and Maine Marine Patrol transported Campbell from North Haven to the Knox County Jail, in Rockland.
