ROCKPORT —  Early evening traffic in Rockport was backed up in both directions April 27 around 5:18 p.m. near the intersection of Route 1 and Pascal Avenue, due to a two-car crash that demolished both vehicles.

Rockport Police Officer Dana Smith responded to the accident. Smith said the collision occurred after Donald Williams, 57, of Owls Head, mistakenly hit the brake pedal instead of the gas pedal in his 2014 Silverado pickup truck while making a left turn from Pascal Avenue onto Route 1. This caused Williams’ truck to stop unexpectedly in the middle of the road, where Dane Winslow, 45, of Camden, collided head-on with it.

Winslow was driving a 2003 Dodge Caravan minivan and traveling southbound on Route 1 when the two vehicles collided.

Smith said the airbags deployed in both vehicles and the drivers escaped any injuries.

Rockport firefighters, who managed traffic control in both directions on Route 1, quickly cleared the crash scene with Camden Exxon towing both vehicles.
