Swan Lake Grocery, Waldo County to meet in Babe Ruth championship
It was only fitting to have the top four seeds playing in the Midcoast Babe Ruth League playoffs July 14, so it will again be fitting to see the top two seeds battle for the crown Wednesday, July 16.
At Belfast High School, second seed Swan Lake Grocery bested third seed Rockland Café 14-10, while top seed Waldo County defeated fourth seed Rockport 11-2 at Searsport High School.
Following are results from the two semifinal contests. The championship game will be at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro and begin at 5 p.m.
#1 Waldo County 11, #4 Rockport 2
Waldo County plated one run in the second inning, six in the third and two in each the fourth and sixth innings. Rockport scored a run in each the first and second inning.
At the plate for Rockport were Jack Poutasse (double, RBI), Nick Denny (single, run), Jesse Fraser (single, run), Cam Gushee (single, stolen base), Brandon Debrosky (single) and Spencer Johndro (single).
Swinging the bats for Waldo County were Barrett Grant (double, single, two RBI, two runs, stolen base), Brandon Smith (double, single, run, stolen base), Cole Frey (two singles, two RBI, run), Emmett Shell (two singles, RBI, two runs, stolen base), Colby Furrow (single, RBI, run), Evan Thomas (single, RBI), Max Thomas (single, RBI), Kyle Moore (RBI, run), Mitchell Philbrook (two runs, stolen base) and Liam Cail (run).
On the mound for Rockport were Lucas Boetsch (4 innings, 7 hits, strikeout, walk) and Fraser (2 innings, four hits, strikeout, walk).
Toeing the rubber for Waldo County were Smith (3 innings, 3 hits, strikeout, walk), Furrow (3 innings, 3 hits, six strikeouts, walk) and Grant (1 inning, two strikeouts, walk).
#2 Swan Lake Grocery 14, #3 Rockland Café 10
Rockland Café chalked up three runs in each the first and fourth innings, one in each the third and fifth and two in the sixth. Swan Lake Grocery tallied up three in the first, six in the second, one in each the third, fourth and fifth, as well as two in the sixth.
Rockland Café pitchers were Jack Freeman, Uriah Thongsaphophone and Coby Dorr. The trio combined for 14 runs, three earned runs, 10 hits, two strikeouts, seven walks, a hit-batter and two balks.
Toeing the rubber for Swan Lake Grocery were Peter Spectre (3.1 innings, six runs, four earned runs, five hits, six strikeouts, walk) and Grey Dinsmore (3.2 innings, four runs, three earned runs, five hits, six strikeouts, walk).
At the plate for Rockland Café were Anthony Moore (two singles), Mitchell Del Frate (two doubles), Sam Townsend (double) and Thongsaphophone (double).
Batting for Swan Lake Grocery were Garrett Hamlin (single and double), Zach Dyer (two singles), Spectre (two singles) and Lucien Gordley-Smith (double).
