A stinging proposal
At his Reichstag address on December 12, 1941, Adolph Hitler announced that his Axis victory would pull down the "Anglo-Saxon-Jewish-Capitalist world so that a better New Order in the world" might rise. Wrong! My father, along with almost 95 million combatants, gave blood and treasure in the Allied effort to win World War II for the free world and to defeat the communist dictator.
On May 11, 2026, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez during a CNN interview stated that the pilgrims left England and came to America, "to escape from the billionaires of their time." Wrong! Theirs was not a "socialist escape." According to the Smithsonian and countless histories, the pilgrims' voyage was to seek religious freedom, and separate from the English Church rather than attempt to purify it.
All of which brings us to the current moment. We are faced today with the phenomenon of "Democratic socialism" — which in itself is really an oxymoron. Democratic party leaders explain that the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have a place under their "big tent."
Many in the DSA espouse changes to the constitution and our American way of life that would be unthinkable in the minds of our ancestors. It is not a joke. It is reality that those in the DSA and others have proposed elimination of the Presidency, the Senate, the Electoral College and the Supreme Court. Many espouse open borders and the end of prisons. Another call is "Medicare for all" - which many economists and financial experts say is a fiscal impossibility.
Maine is a blue state. For towns with more than 1,000 population, the "bluest" towns (most heavily Democrat-registered) are in order, Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Camden. So while I am a Republican, and as popular as a hornet in a nudist colony, I have the temerity to suggest that for the sake of normalcy and keeping the fabric of Maine and America strong, this might be a time for independents and centrists on both sides of the aisle to vote for the GOP candidates. While Democrats counter that the DSA and vocal socialists do not speak for the entire party, it remains true, however, that NO Republican candidates espouse socialism.
I urge you to consider voting for Susan Collins for Senator, and Bobby Charles for Governor. Collins is a distinguished Senator who is the heart-and- soul Maine. In fact, Joe Manchin, Democrat, has called her "the soul of the Senate." She has won the Lugar Award many times for most bi-partisan Senator. The left's criticism of her for being a "Trumper" is laughable. She voted to impeach him. Bobby Charles is needed to bring back prosperity and common-sense government, and to end the Mills' era of a woke, wasteful administration. And, folks, there isn't a socialist bone in their bodies. They are constitutional Americans to their core.
