Special Memorial Day event in Brooks to celebrate one of its own

Monday, May 25, 2026 - 02:00 pmThe Town of Brooks will hold a special Memorial Day event on May 25, 2026, at 2 p.m., at Wentworth’s General Store, in Brooks.
November 25, 1940 Robert P. Grant, 21 years old from Brooks, enlisted in the US Army Air Force and was trained as an aircraft gunner. In 1941, he sailed to the Philippines with the Headquarters 27th Bombardment Group. Robert Grant made the Bataan Death March and died of malaria as a prisoner of war.
Memorial Day, 1949 an auditorium built by area businesses near Morse Memorial School was dedicated in Grant’s honor. The building collapsed in the Ice Storm of 1998 and memorabilia has been on display at the Morse School. The Town of Brooks will take ownership of the building in next the few weeks and the future is uncertain, according to the Town, in a news release.
"The memorabilia will be proudly displayed at Wentworth General Store in Brooks," said the Town.
Owner John Wentworth is the great nephew of Robert P. Grant.
"Please join us in this dedication ceremony May 25, 2026," said the Town.
