ROCKLAND — Five members of the local scuba dive club Mid-Coast Maine Aqua-Nuts gathered to kick off their first Annual Aqua-Nut Underwater Pumpkin Carving event at South End Beach in Rockland on an absolutely beautiful Saturday in late October, according to Charles Lagerbom.

Dive conditions were awesome with little wind, high tide and 53°F water temperature.

Members reported that carving underwater took some getting used to, one was surprised to find that pumpkins float, which required weights placed in them to keep from floating away. Onlookers and passers-by at South End Beach cheered them on and admired the final results.

Just out of the water as they were degearing, Aqua-Nuts were already talking about carving designs for next year.
