RSU 13 superintendent addresses fall reopening, announces family survey

The following letter was distributed to parents in the RSU 13 school district July 2:

Dear Families of Our RSU 13 Community:

I am writing to update you all on our planning process for the reopening of schools in the Fall, and to offer you an opportunity to participate in the planning process by participating in a survey. This is designed to give you a voice in our thoughtful consideration of the reopening of schools, and hopefully give us some insight into your ideas and concerns as we move forward.

Though our primary goal remains to open the schools for in-person instruction, we are also looking at different scenarios given the changing nature of the pandemic situation. Ultimately, we want to make decisions that account for the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and community. We are working closely with the Maine Department of Education, the Governor’s Office and local and state officials in order to have the most recent and relevant guidance to inform our planning process. We will continue to do so through the summer.

With the goal of transparency in mind, I would like to share our planning framework. This is not a plan, but does reflect how we are planning, and will give you an indication of the depth and breadth of our efforts. Below you will find links to the Parent/Community survey as well as a link to the planning documents.

I hope you have time this summer to get outside and enjoy the warm weather. Please know that we are working hard to ensure your children have a successful school experience in the coming year.

    Yours truly,
    John C. McDonald
    Superintendent of Schools
