Rodney Phillip Boynton, Jr., obituary

CAMDEN — Rodney Phillip Boynton, Jr., 75, died on Friday, November 23, 2018 at his home in Camden. 

Born in Gardiner on April 12, 1943, he was the son of Rodney P. and Merna (Whittier) Boynton. 

Following graduation from Camden High School in 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.  Rodney completed his basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ; graduated fourth in his class for heavy equipment training at Fort Belvoir, Virginia; then was stationed in Germany from 1962 to 1964.

He returned to the United States with his future wife, Suse G. Lehner. On October 30, 1964, they were married at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Belfast.

Rodney’s employment included Boynton Chevrolet in Camden working with his father, Mariner’s Paving in Rockport; Fisher Engineering and Knight’s Marine both in Rockland; Damariscotta Boat; and the Knox County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy. 

In March of 1969, Rodney went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Camden where he worked for 34 years.  In 1999, he went to work for his son, Greg at Boynton Construction as a truck driver and equipment operator. For the past two seasons, Rodney has managed a new venture, Boynton Construction Gophers, as the “gopher”.   

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden. 

A “work-a-holic”, Rodney enjoyed hunting and fishing. His favorite times were spent with family and friends at their camp on Washington Pond and fishing in his 12’ aluminum outboard motor boat, the “Queen Mary”. 

Surviving is his wife, Suse Boynton, of Camden; three children, Elke Neuffer and her husband, Werner of Germany; Gregory Boynton of Washington; Brent Boynton and his companion, Becky Eggen from Warren; grandchildren, Norbert, Fabian, Benjamin, Gilbert, Alexandra, Brooke, and Madison; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Darlene Saunders of Whitefield; and three nieces, Katie, Kimberly, and Deidre; many cousins, several aunts and an uncles, Marlene and Jerry Bartlett; Gary Bartlett, Eleanor Garside.  

He was predeceased by one brother, Randy Boynton.

A Memorial Mass followed by a reception will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church in Camden.
